I grew up around race cars, and have had the motor-head bug since I was old enough to twist the throttle of an old Honda 80. My fascination with building cars has resulted in some fairly standard choices for hotrodding and some odd ducks. My favorite builds so far have been a 1970 BMW 2002 that handled like a slot car and took off like a bullet, and a 1967 Volvo 122 that I rebuilt to be a resto-mod that has about every modern convenience built in without sacrificing any of the vintage look.

The old BMW took me three years to build properly; the engine, suspension, transmission - all of it built to work better than the original. It was often the case that I’d pull up to a traffic signal next to what most would consider a true “hot rod” - something with a V8 from the late 60s or early 70s and they would sneer at my little four-banger german sports car. But when the light turned green and all they saw was my high-revving tail lights, I nearly always got a chuckle out of that.

Until the rainy afternoon when it all went wrong and I put that old BMW into a telephone pole.
